It only takes one big rain storm for a dam disaster.  Dams are just one part of our deteriorating infrastructure, one that receives little attention, especially since New Jersey has never experienced a catastrophic dam failure with huge loss of life.
However, with 500 year storms becoming more common, many New Jersey dams are still not up to standards and potentially endanger thousands of lives downstream.
